This human capacity is called 'Theory of Mind' (ToM). The Institute's most advanced research aims to engineer a functional, simulated Theory of Mind in AI systems. This allows an AI to engage in deeper social reasoning: to infer that a person is angry because they believe you intentionally ignored them (even if you didn't), or that someone is sad because they failed to achieve a desired goal. By modeling the hidden mental states that cause emotions, our AI can generate more nuanced, appropriate, and effective social responses, moving closer to genuine social understanding.
Architectural Approaches to Artificial Theory of Mind

- Simulation-Based Theory of Mind: Inspired by simulation theories in neuroscience, this approach has the AI 'run' a internal simulation of the human agent. It uses its own decision-making and emotional appraisal circuits but feeds them the beliefs and goals it hypothesizes the human has. If the simulated agent in this internal model outputs an emotional state matching the observed human emotion, the hypothesized beliefs are considered plausible. This creates a powerful, intuitive form of empathy-by-simulation.
- Integration with Emotional and Narrative Models: The ToM module is not standalone. It is deeply integrated with our affective computing systems (to perceive emotion) and with narrative models that maintain a coherent story of interactions over time. Advanced Healthcare Companions: An AI companion for someone with dementia needs a robust ToM to navigate memory gaps. If the patient asks for their mother (who is deceased), a simple chatbot might correct them, causing distress. A ToM-equipped AI would infer the patient's belief (mother is alive) and emotional need (comfort), and respond in a way that aligns with that mental state ('Tell me about your mother,' or 'She loves you very much'), providing emotional support without confronting a painful reality unnecessarily.
Conflict Mediation and Negotiation: In online dispute resolution or business negotiation platforms, a ToM AI can act as a facilitator. The Limits and Ethical Boundaries
